2007 West Coast Top Prospect Showcase
Jeff Phillips is a 2008 3B P/1B with a 5'10'', 180 lb. frame from Dinuba, CA who attends Dinuba HS. He was selected as a Top Prospect at this event on the strength of his bat, his ability to play the game, and his baseball smarts. It is clear that he spends a lot of time around the game and probably has since he was a little kid. Phillips is not particularly tooled but he is a 'baseball player.' He has a stocky build on a stout frame. He is a good hitter with strong quick hands and a good approach that keeps him inside the ball really well. Phillips hits the ball hard to all fields and has good barrel awareness. He stays back and then takes a direct path to the ball. He also hit well against LH pitchers. Phillips is a line drive/gap hitter with occasional pop. Defensively he likely will play 3rd base in college but he does have some versatility. Though he is a below average runner Phillips does have some range that comes from positioning and instincts, along with a good first step. He makes plays. Phillips can also pitch. He is a strike thrower with a 87-83 mph fastball that he locates and a good curveball (69 mph) with downer action that he throws with feel. He is a winner that can and will make strong contributions in a college progam.
