Tommy MacKoul is a 2007 LHP with a 6'3'', 180 lb. frame from Mission Viejo CA, who attends Capistrano Valley HS. Named a Top Prospect at this event. MacKoul has a very nice pitcher's frame. He has sloped shoulders and a broad build that will continue to fill out quite comfortably. The word is overused, but MacKoul does fall into the projection left-hander category. In addition to having a good body, he pitches with pretty easy effort. His delivery is solid and his arm works well. MacKoul's approach at this time is that of a feel pitcher, but his fastball flashes up to the 87 mph range on occasion. Velocity should continue to come pretty naturally. His main secondary pitch is the change-up (did not show any breaking balls). MacKoul throws the change with nice feel and good hand speed. He can cut it on the opposite arm side, making it particularly effective against right-hand hitters that dive for his fastball. Some late action occurs with the change-up and he showed the ability to use it well without overusing it. Pro scouts should have him on their follow lists this spring. You never know when that spike in velocity will come.
