Rusty Shellhorn is a 2008 left handed pitcher from Central Valley HS, residing in Liberty Lake, WA. He has a 5'9" 150 lb. frame and a compact, athletic body. Shellhorn is a competitive pitcher who competes above his raw stuff, which is good and has a chance to get better, but may be limited in terms of future projection. He has a good, quick arm and creates some leverage with his arm action. His arm works quite well and no matter how physically big he gets, he is still going to gain mph by virture of the way his arm works and his delivery. He is an athlete on the mound, with an energetic delivery and good body control throughout that delivery. Shellhorn competes well with his fastball (which topped at 79 mph) and was able to pitch to both sides of the plate with it. His fastball has good arm side run and in time may even develop some sink. His curveball is a quality pitch that he throws well in the bottom of the zone. He is able to start bats with his curveball but rarely gives up solid contact with that pitch. Shellhorn seemed to use a BP fastball for a change-up. He holds runners well, has good mound presence and competes with moxy. Offensively Shellhorn continued to show that he is a competitive ballplayer. He has decent feel with the bat and is a quality contact, opposite field hitter. His hands work well and he is able to spray the ball around the yard. He is loose and relaxed in the box and believes in his ability. His game and BP at-bats were consistent with each other. He could hit at the small college level. But Shellhorn's thing is pitching and though he is not the most physical player, his skill level is pretty high and he has enough ability to pitch at the college level, even at some levels of D1 baseball.
