Michael Alonso is a 2008 OF/P/1B with a 6'4'', 210 lb. frame from Little Rock, AR, who attends Little Rock Catholic HS. Named to the Top Prospect Team at this event. Alonso has an extra large frame with present strength. At the plate he hits from a slightly closed and crouched stance. He uses a toe tap trigger with no stride and holds his hands away from his body. Alonso hit the only HR of the event smoking a ball over the left field fence. He has good bat speed with raw power and leverage at the point of contact. Alonso likes the ball on the inner half, and he can drive it. On the mound he throws from an over the top arm slot with solid arm speed. He throws slightly across his body and stays balanced through his delivery. His fastball topped out at 82 mph with arm side life, and he mixed in a 12/6 curveball at 68 mph and a 74 mph change. Alonso throws strikes keeping the ball low in the zone. A very projectable player with good upside. He is a good student as well.

Michael Alonso is a 2008 OF/P/1B from Little Rock Catholic HS in Little Rock, AR, with a 6'3'', 210 lb. frame. He has a big for his age that he will have to continue to work hard to keep firm. Alonso ran the 60 in 7.86 and threw 77 mph from the outfield. He hits with his hands way back in his set up and has some negative weight shift back to his back side during his swing. Alonso has a long, level swing with some bat speed. He's clearing his front side early and looking to pull the ball with power. Better balance is going to improve his ability to drive the ball, although his raw strength and size right now enables him to hit with some pop. Alonso also pitched and was probably more impressive in this look on the mound. He showed good arm strength for a sophomore, throwing 82 mph with a loose, free arm action and good arm speed. Like his hitting, Alonso gets little help from his front side or his balance and could immediately pick up more velocity with some adjustments. He didn't throw a breaking ball but did have a nice change up at 71 mph. Alonso does a lot of things well for a young hitter and pitcher and can continue to improve with work and adjustments. Good follow. Alonso is also a good student.
