2005 Atlantic Coast Top Prospect Showcase
Sonberg is a 6-2, 180 lb right handed pitcher/first baseman from South Carolina who looks much stronger and bigger than listed. Sonberg throws with a big, exaggerated hip turn in his delivery and never rotates back to square and ends up throwing against his front side. His arm works well but it has no where to go out front. Sonberg's fastball topped out at 78 mph and he understandably comes across it with some cutting action. His curveball was 67 mph with a slurve type breaking action. We didn't see a change up. Sonberg has a stronger arm and more velocity than he was able to show this day. We also liked what we saw out of Sonberg as a hitter. He has a long, smooth swing with very good extension out front and some bat speed at contact. He went 4-6 during the showcase games with solid line drive hits. He should be followed as a hitter as well as a pitcher.
