Hontz is a big barrel chested, broad backed pitcher with some good arm strength. He has a short arm action in back, like many similarly built power pitchers, and is a bit of a wrapper. Hontz’s fastball was in the 85-88 mph range and we wouldn’t be surprised if he didn’t throw harder sometimes. His fastball was pretty straight but Hontz did a good job of spotting it for strikes. Hontz also throws a full variety of secondary pitches. His curveball was 69-72 mph, his slider 77-78 mph and he also threw a 78 mph change up. With his pitching style and arm action, we can see the slider ending up being his top secondary pitch in the future. He also shows athletic ability and ran close to MLB average in the 60. Interesting prospect! Brett is a very good student too.

Hontz is a big 6 foot 1 and 210 pound right-hander that jumped out at us. He showed easy mechanics and a good working arm. His delivery is clean and he used a firm front leg brace creating a strong platform to throw from. His fastball was clocked between 81-84 mph and his breaking pitches were good. He showed a curve and slider and they were both similar looking out of the hand but took a different path. The curve was 70-72 and the slider was mostly 74mph. All 3 pitches were thrown for strikes and he displayed an advanced overall package. With his low effort, size and present strength we think he has the potential to become a frontline starter in a good College program. He also showed power potential at the plate and defensive ability at 1B. Brett is a very good student..
