Jake Staton is a 2008 RHP/1B with a 6'0'', 180 lb. frame from Escondido, CA, who attends Cathedral Catholic HS. Staton has a good lean and athletic frame with present strength. On the mound he throws from a 3/4 arm slot with a long and loose arm and has good extension on his finish. Staton mixes in three pitches with a deceptive delivery and full hip turn. His fastball topped out at 80 mph, while his CB was 69 mph and his changeup was 66 mph. Staton throws all three pitches for strikes working both side of the plate, and he gets ahead of hitters. He maintains his arm speed on his changeup with sink and run. Staton's pitchability and command give him upside on the mound. Defensively he has arm strength from first base with good footwork and hands around the bag. He hits from an open stance with a quiet approach, and uses a line drive swing plane. He uses all fields and hits solid line drives when he keeps his weight back. Staton is also a good student.

Jake Staton is a 2008 RHP/1B/3B from Cathedral Catholic HS, residing in Escondido, CA, with a 6'1" 170 lb. frame. Has an average athletic body and a medium build. Pitches from a high 3/4 slot with a low elbow arm stroke. He is a drop and drive type of pitcher and a strike thrower, particularly with his 78-79 mph FB. Was able to effectively pitch off his 67-71 mph CB. That breaking ball had laredo style action and was his best pitch. He also showed some feel for the change-up. At the plate Staton was all hands with his sweeping swing. It was a simple approach to hitter and was the same from both sides of the plate. On defense he showed decent footwork, soft hands, and quiet actions. In time some strength gains will tell more of the story about Staton. For now, consider him a follow prospect on the mound, at the small college level.
