LATEST PG SHOWCASE REPORT
2004 Underclass National Showcase
Billy Block -- Block is a slender, live bodied middle infielder from Florida with very deceptive strength in his hands and arms. This young prospect hits from the narrow, no load, no stride approach that we associate with contact hitters, but Block showed us the ability to really put a charge into the ball. He has bat speed and the ball jumps off his bat to all fields. If he gets more lower half involvement, the ball is going to be whistling. Defensively, Block has good actions in the field and quick feet. His arm strength is big league quality right now and will keep him at shortstop throughout college at least. He runs very well, he does everything very well. Block also took a quick turn on the mound to finish a game and was very impressive. He pitched at 85-86 mph with a 74 mph curveball and it looked easy for him to do. Block threw almost all strikes and looked in complete command. He could definitely pitch at the college level as well. We obviously like this young prospect. He is a strong student as well. His size makes him a better pro prospect as a player, but he can really pitch.
