Daniel is a live bodied 5-11 left handed hitting outfielder from North Carolina who also showed prospect tools as a pitcher. He ran the 60 in 7.19 and showed consistently good speed down to first base, running three times between 4.33 and 4.35 from the left side. Daniels showed very good arm strength from the outfield at 85 mph and is a solid defensive outfielder. It would be interesting to see him in the infield as his tools and athleticism would play there well, too. Offensively, Daniels hits from a high handed set up with a short, wristy swing. He made contact to all fields, mostly on the ground. Daniels will benefit from more strength to generate more bat speed in the future. As a pitcher, Daniels was very consistent between 83 and 85 mph on his fastball during 2 separate outings. He has a quick arm and repeats his delivery well. His 73 mph curveball showed some sharpness as well and he should be followed as a pitcher as well as an outfielder. Daniels is also an excellent student.

Daniel is a 5-10 junior right handed pitcher from North Carolina who also showed potential as an infield prospect. In fact, many people will likely consider Daniel a better prospect as an every day player. On the mound, Daniel has a loose, quick arm, solid pitching mechanics and a standard ¾’s release point. The ball comes out of Daniel’s hand very easily and it’s easy to imagine him throwing harder than his present 79-81 mph when he’s in mid-season form. Daniel will both cut and sink his fastball at different times. He needs some work on his 65-67 mph curveball and also threw a 66 mph change up. Daniel’s 80 mph arm strength during infield drills shows his natural arm strength as well. Daniel played third base well during the showcase games and made all the plays, showing good footwork and fundamentals positioning himself for ground balls. At the plate, Daniel has a big coil and some hand hitch and takes a hard aggressive cut that generates above average bat speed from the left side. He showed his power during the games with a long double up the LCF gap and also showed nice instincts running the bases. When you look at Daniel’s overall tools, one area doesn’t stand out but you watch him play and you realize that he has skills and talent just about everywhere. He’s a good looking player for the right college program. Daniels is also an excellent student.

Ryan Daniel is a young 2006 right handed pitcher/outfielder from Yanceyville, North Carolina, with above average present strength for his age. We didn’t get to see Daniel in the first day workouts because the North Carolina high schools started class the first week of August, but Daniel put in a strong performance on the second day of the showcase. On the mound, Daniel had a good clean arm stroke and was up to 81 mph with his fastball. He threw both a slider (73 mph) and a curveball (66 mph) with some effectiveness. We were probably more impressed with Daniel as a hitter on a short look. He uses his strength well with the bat and attacks the ball aggressively. Daniel took one ball off the centerfield fence at Duke on one bounce, and you have to crush the ball with wood to get it out there, especially as a sophomore. We hope to see more of Daniel in the future.
