Lopez is a 5-10, 170 lb left handed hitting middle infielder from Florida with a mature body and a very mature approach to the game. Lopez is a 7.52 runner, which is the only thing that he doesn't do at a high level on the baseball field. He's a very smooth and polished infielder defensively with balance and plus arm strength. Lopez's arm strength is obvious in game situations and enables him to play back a bit and improve his range. He can play shortstop at the next level with less than ideal speed and should have to play himself off that position. Offensively, Lopez is a top level hitter with very quick and strong hands and surprising raw power. He has some upper cut in his swing that with his ability to center the ball really helps him get the ball to the fences. Lopez showed power to all fields, including a blast off the right field fence, but his natural spot to hit the ball is to left centerfield. He looks like a Tony Gwynn/Wade Boggs type of hitter who finds nothing so easy than to line a ball over the shortstop's head. This is a very, very good player who some top level college coaches might sell short because of his height and speed but who can flat play anywhere.

Lopez is a left handed hitting infielder from Florida with an extremely polished game. It wouldn’t surprise us for Lopez to be able to step up a level right now offensively and continue to hit line drives. He has good physical maturity that enables him to generate bat speed. He has a very quick and balanced swing. Lopez has very good coil and rhythm through the ball, very good extension and makes consistent hard contact to all fields. He doesn’t always show power but you know it’s there and he’ll occasionally turn on a ball hard and drive it. He’s a top level hitter. Defensively, Lopez’s profiles well at 3rd base. He has smooth hands and plenty of arm strength to be a very good 3rd baseman. College coaches looking for a player to contribute right away should like this young prospect. Lopez is also a solid student.

Rafael Lopez might have been the top pure hitter at the Showcase. He’s a present strong 5'8" middle infielder from Wellington, Florida, and a left handed hitter. Lopez has a very balanced approach with excellent rhythm, and above average bat speed and hand strength. He squared up on virtually every ball he swung at in batting practice and in games, and showed his power to all fields at different times. Lopez hits like a much bigger player and is going to be a run producer with metal in his hands. Defensively, Lopez is a smooth and confident player who made all the plays. He has good arm strength with a quick, polished release, and he works hard to get into position to make plays look easy. The only flaw in Lopez’s game is his overall speed. If Lopez was a 6.6 runner instead of a 7.6 runner, you’d see his name near the top of national prospect lists. We really like the way this young 2006 prospect carries himself, too. He’s a ball player who is going have plenty of success in the future.

Young "06" who looks pretty strong. Showed some arm strength and hitting ability. Pretty good hands. Short compact swing with short stride. Under control. Be interesting to see him in a few years.
