2/5/12: The 2012 high school class has many impressive young power hitters, including fellow All-Americans such as Trey Williams, Courtney Hawkins, Nick Williams and Jesse Winker. But Joey Gallo stamped his name as the top power threat in the class with one swing at the Perfect Game All-American Classic at Petco Park in San Diego on August 14, 2011. His towering 442-foot blast to right centerfield off a 92 mph Lucas Sims fastball was the 10th longest home run ever recorded in the San Diego Padres home park, one of most notorious pitcher’s parks in all of Major League Baseball. Even without that nationally televised moment, the left handed hitting Gallo would still probably rank as the class’s top power threat. He hit .471-25-76 as a junior at a Bishop Gorman High School in suburban Las Vegas, twice hitting three bombs in one game, and now has 46 home runs going into his senior season. The 6-5/220 Gallo has some length to his left-handed swing, which some scouts are anxious to point out, as if a 6-5 athlete is going to have a short swing. He can get tied up on inside velocity, especially up in the strike zone. But he has very good bat speed and outstanding leverage at contact and smooth, loose extension through the ball. Gallo’s power doesn’t come from effort and he hits under control and recognizes pitches well. His power is mostly pull oriented at present but he will have more than enough strength to take the ball out of the park to center and left centerfield as he matures as a hitter. Gallo’s prospect status doesn’t just depend on his prodigious power, though. His raw arm strength as an infielder ranks just behind SS Carlos Correa in the class, and while he has long actions at times at third base, Gallo is a graceful athlete who has soft hands and is adept at making the charging plays. There is some scout talk about Gallo ending up as a first baseman, perhaps as a comparison to recent Las Vegas All-American Kris Bryant, another 6-foot-5 All-American slugger, but Gallo is a better athlete defensively than Bryant with at least two grades better arm strength. Another part of Gallo’s overall prospect package, although a smaller consideration, is that he would be legitimate potential top two round pick as a right handed pitcher. His fastball is regularly in the 93-94 mph range working out of the bullpen, and both his mid 70s curveball and low 80s change up have promise should he ever throw more innings to develop them. Probably the best comparison to Gallo at the same age among the last generation of prospects would be a left handed hitting version of four-time All-Star Troy Glaus. A Southern California product, Glaus was also a 6-5/220 high school power hitter with a mid 90s fastball off the mound. He had a very strong commitment to UCLA but the Padres still picked him with the 37th overall selection in the 1994 draft. He enjoyed a sterling career at UCLA before being the third overall pick in 1997. When scouts talk about Gallo’s swing and worry about his ability to handle velocity, they should remember two things. First is obviously the home run in the Perfect Game All-American Classic. The second should be his 2012 season debut on February 4. Facing the top ranked prospect in the 2012 class, RHP Lucas Giolito, Gallo went 2-for-3 off Giolito’s mid 90s heat. Just to put an emphasis on the performance, he also pitched the last two innings against Giolito’s national title contender Harvard Westlake team, striking out four hitters while topping out at 95 mph.

Joey Gallo is a 2012 3B/RHP with a 6-5 205 lb. frame from Henderson, NV who attends Bishop Gorman HS. Large well proportioned athletic build, very good present strength. Smooth and polished defensive actions, soft hands, charges well, good balance, outstanding arm strength, accurate on line lasers. Left handed hitter, extraordinary strength and leverage, light tower power in batting practice, 100 mph + off the bat in games even when not squared, lets the ball travel deep, hands can be late at times and pull barrel through zone, can be beat by well placed velocity at present. Also pitches, easy leg raise delivery, extended 3/4's release point with good angle. Fastball 92-94 mph, good hard run/bore at times, throws strikes with his fastball, nice change up with fading action, tends to get under curveball, shows polish on the mound considering inexperience. Huge tools, very high ceiling talent, scouts split on 3B vs. RHP future. Good student, verbal commitment to Louisiana State. Named to the Perfect Game All American Classic team.

Joey Gallo is a 2012 3B/SS/P with a 6'4'', 190 lb. frame from Henderson, NV who attends Bishop Gorman HS. Plus athletic frame, strong now with more to come. Long powerful left handed swing, outstanding bat speed for age, ball jumps hard, plus power potential, lift/pull approach, hit game HR at full-sized pro field, does tend to get out front, open early. Agile for size, prototype third base tools, very good arm strength. Also pitched, raw mechanics but topped at 90 mph, flashed hard spinning CB, nice change for strikes. Clearly a better 3B prospect, though. Chance to be special player, high ceiling. Good student.
