Couwenhoven is a long and lean 6-5, 205 lb first baseman with some serious power potential. He has good hand quickness with the bat and great leverage on contact. Couwenhoven would greatly benefit from a different approach, though. He hits from a very, very wide stance with moderate crouch and no load or hip turn, the net result being that he loses much of his natural power potential. He is a good athlete for his size. He ran 7.21 in the 60 and made some nice defensive plays at first base. Mike compares very closely to Wisconsin's Tyler Beranek, other than he isn't as well known and needs a bit more development. Mike could be a giant sleeper and he’s very strong academically as well.

Couwenhoven is an "04" 1B from Indiana. He's a big strong 6'5/205 with room for even more strength. He is similar to highly rated Tyler Beranek from Wisconsin but without the fan fare. Ran an impressive 7.18 on a slow track in Ft Myers. Threw an impressive 82 mph across the infield. His footwork could improve but he's a good defensive 1B. As with most big strong 1B Mike's bat is his strongest asset. Starts out of a wide stance he shows timing technique and power. The ball jumps off the wood at a high velocity. Maybe the top hitting prospect at this event. Big time power potential and bat speed under control. Big strong guy with big strong bat and a top student as well. Very interesting prospect.
