4/26/12: Seager gets instant name recognition due to his brother Kyle, a three year standout at North Carolina and a third round pick in the 2009 draft who has already reached the big leagues with the Seattle Mariners. But the younger Seager is a very different athlete, and aside from the fact that they are both left handed hitting infielders, there is no strong basis to compare the two. Seager has a long and lean 6-foot-4, 190-pound frame with coat hanger shoulders and plenty of room to add additional strength. He plays shortstop in high school but is universally considered to be a third baseman at the next level, whether that be professionally or at South Carolina, and played third base exclusively at high profile showcases last summer, including at the Perfect Game All-American Classic in San Diego. In fact, Seager earns his highest praise from scouts for his defensive potential. Despite his size, Seager is a 6.85 to 7.00 runner in the 60 and has exceptionally quick and athletic actions at third base. He reacts instinctively to the ball and has the ability to accelerate laterally to ground balls when most third baseman are playing react, step-and-dive defense. Seager’s exchange and release is well above average in quickness and consistency and shows up especially on double play feeds to second base, a play many young third basemen struggle with when they are young. He’s shown 90 mph arm strength across the diamond that coupled with his quick release is an ideal combination. As a veteran of hundreds of showcases, Seager’s defensive performance at the 2011 East Coast Professional Showcase was one of the best I’ve ever seen at such an event. He dominated a couple of games with plays that looked routine only if you are used to seeing big league third baseman do the same thing. They weren’t plays that high school juniors make with any consistency, let alone comfortable and repeatable skills. Seager’s bat is what is keeping him from being a first round consideration at this time. He has above average raw bat speed and the ball comes off the barrel very hard at impact. Seager’s bat speed and leverage at contact from the left side alone make him impossible to not project as a hitter, both for power and average. But he has an unconventional hand cocking action in his load that leaves his bat angle severely “wrapped” in scout terminology (i.e the barrel is pointing almost directly at the pitcher), which creates both length and timing issues against top level pitchers who can combine both velocity and quality off-speed pitches. There are successful big league hitters who have hand hitches and who have wrapped starts to their swings, but the combination is difficult to work through and will most likely require Seager to make some adjustments. Seager is a top notch student and his brother had a very successful college career, so his commitment to South Carolina is perceived as very strong in the scouting community. However, the Seattle Mariners do have the third pick in the second round (63rd overall), which is just about where Seager subjectively falls on a national draft order. A Seager vs. Seager battle for the Mariners starting third base job in, let’s say Spring Training 2016, isn’t the most far-fetched scenario imaginable.

Corey Seager is a 2012 MIF/3B with a 6-3 195 lb. frame from Kannapolis, NC who attends Northwest Cabarrus HS. Excellent physical build, square shoulders with tons of projection. Left handed hitter, big hand coil and wrap to start swing, generates very good bat speed, loose extended swing with lift, ball jumps hard, hand action creates length at beginning of swing. 6.85 runner, very good infield arm strength, plus carry on throws, accurate, third base future but all the tools to be a defensive standout. Brother of Mariners 2B Kyle Seager. Outstanding student, verbal commitment to South Carolina. Named to the Perfect Game All American Classic team.
