Cravey is a slender and athletic 6-1, 170 lb shortstop/right handed pitcher from Texas. He grades out very well as a shortstop prospect, especially on defense, but we think that he's a higher ceiling pitching prospect right now. There is no doubt that Cravey's athleticism helps him out on the mound. He has a very balanced, smooth delivery and an effortless release on his pitches. Cravey's fastball was 87-89 mph from a very fast and smooth arm action. His best pitch was a nasty 76-78 mph curveball that had very, very sharp, hard biting action. This curveball is a big time strikeout pitch and ranks with the better curveballs in the country for Cravey's age group. He also threw a 81 mph change up. Cravey has a very high ceiling as a pitcher with plus athleticism, velocity and the ability to spin the ball and change speeds. As a position prospect, Cravey's best skills are on defense. He's a smooth and polished defensive shortstop who has the ability to play that position at a very high level. He obviously has the arm strength and his actions, especially moving through the ball, are pro quality. The one hole in his game right now is with the bat. Cravey has the strength and raw bat speed to hit but is a long way away at present. He has a long, sweeping, grooved metal bat swing and consistently pulls off the ball. The potential is there to make significant improvement with adjustments and good coaching. The best comparison for Cravey is current Texas Longhorn star pitcher Kyle McCullough, who was a primary shortstop at Bellaire HS before moving on and blossoming as a pitcher at UT. They have similar physical builds and tool packages at the same respective ages. Cravey is also an outstanding student off the field.

Kevin Cravey is a 2006 shortstop/right handed pitcher from Spring, Texas, with a big time arm and good overall athletic ability. He has a medium frame with some present strength and it looks like he has room to grow a bit more. Cravey lists himself as a primary shortstop, and he has definite college/pro level tools as a player. He might have even better professional level tools as a pitcher, though. Cravey has a clean delivery with somewhat of a Todd Jones type of drift to the plate and a very, very quick, smooth arm stroke. Cravey accelerates his arm as well as any young pitcher you’ll see. His fastball was in the 87-89 mph range with good consistent running action. Both of Cravey’s secondary pitches had quality to them. His 75-78 mph breaking ball was bigger than a typical slider, but still had late, hard biting action. It could be a strikeout pitch for him in the future. Cravey’s 76 mph change up was also a good pitch. As a position player, Cravey’s arm strength is obvious in watching him throw from the infield, and his fielding actions are athletic and confident. At the plate, Cravey has somewhat of an aluminum bat swing that he cuts off out front, but shows very good bat speed and the ball jumps off his bat well. He had a couple of game hits, including a double, that were smoked. Kevin is a top student as well as a top prospect.
