McCarthy is a senior first baseman from Iowa with a strong, mature body. He’s a “backwards” player in that he’s a left handed thrower/fielder but a right handed hitter. McCarthy’s hitting is the best part of his game. He hits from an open to closed approach and does a good job of closing off and hitting through the ball. McCarthy’s hands are very strong and he has a short, crisp swing that shows very good bat speed. McCarthy hit well both in batting practice and against live pitching and had some juice in his bat that produced some extra base hits. He has the ability to hit to all fields and projects to be a good productive hitter at the next level. Defensively, McCarthy is limited to first base for now because of his arm strength but shows good footwork around the base. He is a very good student.
