Cantu is a 6-0, 160 lb right handed hitting senior first baseman from Texas with some upper body strength. He's a 7.99 runner with 78 mph arm strength who also pitched a bit. Cantu handled himself around the bag well and had soft hands. At the plate, Cantu has very good hand/eye coordination at the plate and uses his hands very well to make solid contact. He keeps his swing short and crisp to the ball. Cantu had a couple of sharp hits and a few more sharp outs during the games and seemed to center everything. He projects some gap to gap power as he matures physically. As a pitcher, Cantu threw 74 mph with a long arm action. He is a good student.

Joseph Cantu is a 2006 right handed pitcher from Pflugerville, Texas, who also plays first base. Cantu has smooth and balanced actions in all parts of his game; defense, at the plate and on the mound, and looks like an athlete who is going to improve on his already strong build. His defensive actions at first indicate that he might be able to play third base as well. Cantu threw 76-78 mph with his fastball with a smooth arm stroke that generated good extension out front. His curveball was 64-65 mph, and had occasional good downward break. Cantu also swung the bat well, using his strength to hit some good line drives.

Cantu is a very young sophomore who has a lot of growing ahead and a good projection for his baseball future. With just an '88 birthdate, Cantu is already 5 foot 11 and 165 pounds. He is a primary position pitcher and he is a right-hander that has a deep pitch selection. He showed 3 good pitches and we noticed that his off-speed pitches came out of his hand real nicely for this stage in his career. He threw a 72-75 mph fastball and his change-up was clocked at 69 mph. He also threw a 62-66 mph curve that had a good downward break on it. With the ease at which he can throw his off-speed stuff we think those might end up be real good pitches as he gets stronger and gains the velocity on his overall pitching package. He also showed soft hands with good transfers in the infield and a level swing with the bat. He has a good upside and plenty of time to get there.
