John Phelps is a 2005 LHP from Chesapeake, Virginia, with a 5'11", 195 lb. frame who knows how to pitch. He has a very smooth and easy delivery with an on line stride. He has a good arm arch with a clean arm action. We have seen Phelps at several events in the past and he never disappoints. In early December form, he showed a good feel for all of his pitches with a potential pro level change up. His fastball topped out at 81 mph, while he threw his curveball at 73 mph, and his change up at 74 mph. We did see him pitch in the upper 80s in October, and touch 88 mph. Phelps is athletic in his actions, and has a strong body with college arm speed and very good life on his fastball. His curveball is a tight spinner with late darting life. He can spot his change up on both sides of the plate. Pro scouts will want to see him this spring. Top level D1 pitcher now.

John is a 5-10/180 lb., square shouldered left handed pitcher, "05" outfielder from Chesapeake, Virginia. His bat can make him a two way player, but we see his future on the mound. His size may hold some scouts back but this one can pitch at any college in the country. He will make scouts take notice of him. He shows a powerful torque, very quick arm and a polished, balanced delivery. His fastball was 84mph at this showcase, but we saw it at 88mph two weeks earlier. It has nice sink with late movement. His curve has late action at 74mph with 2-8 rotation, tilt and depth. It is a plus pitch. He needs to develop a change as a third pitch, but he knows what he is doing between the lines. At the plate he hits from the left side with a quiet approach, good balance and gap power. He uses all fields well and squares up on the ball with a good swing plane. John is a good student.

John Phelps -- Phelps is a compact, physically strong left hander with a strong arm and some polish to his game. We’ve seen him compete a couple of times before and he’s been on the national stage, too. Phelps threw 82-84 mph in Fort Myers and we’ve seen him faster in the past. He has a quick gather in his windup and appears at times to jump at the plate, which makes his fastball seem faster than it is. Phelps is very aggressive in the strike zone with his fastball and we see a lot of bad, late swings against it. Phelps’ breaking ball is a 73 mph hard slurve that gets good break to it and he uses it on the outside half to right handers. His change up is the same speed but gets good running action in the opposite direction. This young prospect has the present stuff and approach to get hitters out at the next level and we really like his makeup. He also showed some hitting ability. He’s a good student, too.
