Grunewald is a 6-0, 180 lb junior catcher from Illinois. He’s wiry strong with a nice athletic body. Grunewald shows good quickness behind the plate and shifts and moves well. He threw 71 mph in workouts with good accuracy on his throws and a best pop time of 2.17. We’ve seen him quicker in the past. Grunewald hit very well at the showcase. He generates some bat speed from an upright stance and good hand position and loading action. Grunewald crushed a triple deep to right centerfield one at bat and made several good adjustments on pitches in other at bats to pick up hits. He had nice extension in his swing and could continue to develop his power as he gets stronger.

John Grunewald is a 2006 catcher from Moline, Illinois, with a lean and athletic 5'11", 170 lb. frame. Grunewald has very solid arm strength throwing 75 mph during the workout. He also has a quick transfer with good accuracy on his throws. Grunewald has well above average bat speed with some adjustability with his hands. He showed the ability to go with outside pitches, and drove in a runner in one of the showcase games with a solid single to right field. He has a projectable body, and should continue with his strong catch and throw abilities. Outstanding defensive catcher who can hit and play!

John Grunewald is a 2006 catcher from Moline, Illinois, with a muscular build at 6'0", 170 pounds. He hits from a wide stance with good balance during the swing and a high finish. He has a good weight transfer and good extension with good bat speed and control. He has a solid base behind the plate with good blocking skills. He has a strong arm (75 mph) with good carry, he just needs to have quicker feet, and a more smooth ball transfer to bring the pop times down (2.16-2.29). He also pitched with a 77mph fastball and a 61mph curveball. He works very hard, and he has a good feel for how to play the game. John has a plus arm, a good work ethic, and will become a high level college catcher as he matures.

John Grunewald: Grunewald is a sophomore catcher from Illinois with a very nice projectable body and good present athletic actions. He showed us an advanced ability to hit for a young player. He could turn into a real offensive force at the highest levels of college or pro ball as he gets bigger and stronger. Grunewald’s best defensive tool right now is his arm strength. He was 75-77 mph on his pop throws, very very good for a sophomore catcher. Grunewald moves his feet well behind the plate. He's a top level receiver already with a strong arm and good bat. Very athetic catcher, that could end up being one of the very best "06" players in the Midwest. Keep close watch on this kid.

John Grunewald -- Grunewald is a very young sophomore catcher from Illinois. He has a projectable medium framed body and showed us good offensive potential, especially if he gains more strength. Grunewald’s approach is a bit busy at the plate but he generated good bat speed in BP and showed good contact to the middle of the field and some power potential. Grunewald shortened up his swing a bit against live pitching and was more contact oriented, but either approach works well for him. Defensively, Grunewald had good arm strength for a young player but will need some work shortening his release. Interesting "05" catching prospect.
