Ruiz is a very strong young man with good tools and skills. We’ve seen him throw better than he did in Fort Myers but Ruiz still showed solid big league average arm strength. His game pop times are just about as good as his workout times and he threw one runner out with a 2.09 throw right on the bag. Ruiz receives the ball very well, too. We’ve seen him play third base when he isn’t catching and you can see how smoothly his hands work at that position. Ruiz took a strong batting practice and showed his strength and power potential. It looked like he was hitting from a little more open stance, which could be a good adjustment for him. Ruiz’s swing tends to get long in games and he gets jammed at times. Opening up might get his hands through quicker. Ruiz is a very good student who has signed to go to Boston College. He should help them immediately.

Ruiz was one of a number of catchers at the PG National who showed us big league defensive skills and a big league body. In fact, there are more than a couple of big league catchers who would give part of their next paycheck for Ruiz’s body and arm strength. Ruiz handled the top pitchers in Lincoln with polish and threw as well in game situations as he did during the workouts. He also impressed us with his leadership potential and dugout demeanor. Like a couple of those other catchers, Ruiz’s future will largely depend on how his bat develops. Right now he’s stiff through the zone with wood and needs to get the bat head out to ball quicker. He does show hitting ability to all fields and there's little doubt but that he's going to hit. Like most catchers it would benefit Ruiz greatly to go the college route first. We do expect to see him in pro ball at some time. If the bat shows well before the draft it could be pro ball next year. Jett is an excellent student.

Ruiz was one of the top prospects in the event and the top catcher. He showed us that he can do everything near the Major League level except run. And as a catcher, running is the least expected in a prospect. As a receiver, Ruiz showed us the softest hands and easiest receiving ability in the showcase. His body is in the Professional mold right now at 6 foot 2 and 200 pounds. His swing was one of the quickest with wood power and his arm strength is at the Major League level right now. He popped consistently in the 1.9's and as fast as 1.89 to second base with a velocity of 79 mph, with his tailbone nearly touching the dirt. He threw within himself keeping balance and showing accuracy and good carry to the bag. With the bat, Ruiz had a professional approach and stands out with the intensity he played the game. He started off his first at bat with a Home Run and stayed hot with the bat until the event was over. He is a good catching prospect that will be watched by Perfect Game until the 2004 draft. Good student.
