James Mahler is a RHP/ with a 6-7 245 lb. frame from Sandy, UT who attends Jordan. Very large build, strong mature body. Uses height well to get downhill, consistently around strike zone. Fastball showed occasional cutting action, slider flashed sharpness and downer bite. Curveball showed good downer shape, inconsistent changeup.

James Mahler is a 2007 right hand pitcher from Jordan HS, residing in Sandy, UT. Mahler has a long and broad body on what looks to be both a durable 6'6" 225 lb. frame that will continue to fill out. He is not always pretty and has a long way to go in some respects, but it was what Mahler did in a positive sense that got him ranked #33 among PG National Top 85 pitchers. He pitches from an over the top slot and clearly has a strong arm that creates good arm speed. His deilvery is a bit unorthodox as he flies open early, seemingly exposing his shoulder and the ball, but he did create good down angle and seem to get his hand to a decent position at release point. Mahler has a very heavy fastball that has both sink and late life down in the zone, touching up to 90 mph and sitting in the upper 80s. With some delivery adjusments and a bit more extension, there is good reason to think there is a bit more in this big young body. His best pitch is a tight downer curveball. It would not be a stretch to call that pitch a hammer. Currently it is an above average MLB pitch and as he gains more velocity, it will move to the plus category on the highest grading scale. Not only is the action very good on his curveball, but Mahler keeps it down very consistently. He is more likely to miss in the dirt a foot before the plate than he is to hang one. Simply put, Mahler's curveball is a legitimate out pitch. Though it may not look like it a first, he actually has good pitchability, which may come from being schooled in a family of MLB arms. His father Mick pitched in the Big Leagues for a number of organizations and his late uncle Rick pitched many years for the Atlanta Braves. It seems as though his stuff would play well against wood bats and considering that his breaking ball and heavy fastball were developed at altitude, his stuff could really take off at sea level. The opinion here is that Mahler profiles very well for the pro game.

James Mahler is a 2007 RHP with a 6'6'', 225 lb. frame from Sandy, UT, who attends Jordan HS. Mahler has a huge frame with great present strength. On the mound he throws from an over the top arm slot with a short arm action. Mahler has good arm speed, and stays inline and balanced in his delivery. Mahler has a slight hip turn to the hitter and takes a short stride for a pitcher his size. His fastball topped out at 87 mph while working in the 85-87 mph range, but it was his curveball that is his best pitch. Mahler throws a hard 12 to 6 breaking ball with depth and sharpness at 76 mph. He mixed his pitches well, but his curveball is almost unhittable when he stays on top of the pitch. He did not allow a hit in his 3 IP while striking out 6. At the plate Mahler has great raw power and bat speed. He gets leverage in his swing and can hit that ball hard and far. The ball jumps off his bat and he hit several HRs during batting practice. Mahler is a very good prospect with great upside.
