His throws carry and are online. He uses his 6.51 speed to cover a lot of ground. He has quick hands at the plate and hits hard line drives. He has strength in his swing and is good to the pull side. He shows serious bat speed on his good swings. Moynihan has outstanding tools and is one to watch closely in 2009. He is also a very good student.

He has outstanding speed which transfers over to his very good range in the outfield. Defensively, Moynihan has good footwork in the the outfield and moves athletically to the ball. He is an aggressive defender and really looks to get to every ball he can. Moynihan makes good accurate throws with some carry. He has solid actions with sound transfers. At the plate, Moynihan starts with a no load approach and has a simple swing. He stays short to the baseball and generates good bat speed. Moynihan can hit the ball to the opposite field well and swings on a line drive path. He hits the ball where its pitched and uses all fields. Moynihan is aggressive on the basepaths and has good baserunning instincts. He is a very good student.

Matthew Moynihan is a 2009 OF with a 6'2'', 205 lb. frame from San Diego, CA who attends Cathedral Catholic HS. He was selected as a the Top '09 Prospect at this event and is going to rate as a top prospect at most events he attends during his high school career. Moynihan has a chance to be one of the special impact players in the '09 class. He is strong and athletic with a streamlined body that is built for high performance. He is a very talented athlete and likely excels no matter what sport he plays. Moynihan has the type of speed to impact the game and can reach top speed quickly. Presently he utilizes his speed really well with a contact hitting approach. He is short and quick to the ball and though he makes good barrel contact, he does not hit with any power yet. It is almost as though he as always been very fast and learned to hit in a manner that allowed him to use his speed. However, Moynihan is strong and hopefully someday he will change his approach and figure out that he does have power. We think the power that is in his body and hands will eventually emerge with the bat. As it is now, Moynihan puts a lot of pressure on the defense and that is not likely to change. He is a confident and aggressive player. Defensively he has centerfield speed and skills, with a good arm that projects to get stronger.
