DJ Downs is a 6'2" 180 pound 2007 right handed pitcher and first baseman from Park Vista High School in Boynton Beach, Florida. He has a lean athletic build with good genes (Brother of Darin Downs). DJ is a good pitcher who uses a full windup and throws from a 3/4 arm slot. He commands all of his pitches very well and is aggressive in the zone. With a delivery that is low effort, he has a long arm that is loose and easy. His fastball has good sink and run at 76 mph. A cutter is also mixed in at 72 mph with late life on it. He also throws a curveball with sharp 11/5 rotation at 66 mph. His best pitch is his change up at 70 mph that has very good deception to it. Downs hits with an open stance that is narrow. He has good hand eye coordination and good balance in his swing. DJ generates good bat speed and keeps his quick hands inside the ball very well. He is a line drive hitter who likes to use the middle of the field by staying short to the ball. DJ is an interesting young prospect who is also a very good student with a 3.87 gpa.

Downs is a very young sophomore right handed pitcher from Florida. He is the brother of 2003 Chicago Cubs 4th round pick LHP Darin Downs. Downs has a slender, projectable body that hasn't started to add strength yet. Downs throws from a 3/4's arm slot with a loose, easy arm stroke that promises more velocity in the future. His fastball topped out at 75 mph with good life in three innings of work. Downs also threw a 66 mph curveball and 65 mph change up and looked like he had confidence in both pitches. Although he professes not to be a hitter, Downs showed some good ability with the bat for a young player, making very solid and consistent contact in both batting practice and in game action. Downs is a very good student. He is a sophomore to keep a close eye on.
