Derek Willis is a 2008 OF/RHP with a 6'0'', 165 lb. frame from Glendale, AZ, who attends North Canyon HS. Willis has a tall, lean, and projectable frame. He has solid speed in the sixty and on the bases. Defensively he moves well to the ball in the outfield, and throws with a long arm action with solid arm strength. At the plate he is a right handed hitter who hits from a slightly closed to straight away stance with a slight crouch. He keeps his hands away from his body, and shows good bat speed, especially on the inside pitch. On the mound he throws from a 3/4 arm slot with a deceptive delivery. Willis has a short arm circle with solid arm speed. He throws across his body, but stays balanced. Willis gets arm side life on his fastball that topped out at 71 mph, and mixed in a slow curveball at 56 mph. He is an excellent student as well.

Derek Willis is a 2008 OF/RHP from North Canyon HS in Glendale, AZ, with a 6'0", 170 lb. frame. Willis was one of the youngest players at the event and he fit in well. He ran a 7.26 sixty on a slow track and showed very good game speed and quickness. Defensively he covered a great deal of ground in the outfield with good actions. Willis has an accurate throwing arm with solid carry. At the plate he is a right handed hitter who hits from a closed stance. He gets great leverage in his swing and has good bat speed with a line drive swing path. Willis sometimes keeps his stride closed which doesn't allow him to rotate his hips and turn on inside pitches and hit them with authority, but he has the athleticism and strength to make the adjustment. Willis plays the game hard, and it will be fun to see what type of player he is in 2-3 years. He is a must follow, and is an excellent student.
