2006 California Showcase-Aug 26 & 27
Dorsey Ek is a 2007 RHP/1B with a 6'7'', 200 lb. frame from San Diego CA, who attends Francis Parker HS. Selected as a Top Prospect at this event (1st base). Ek is a primary pitcher but had some arm soreness that limited him to just a couple of pitches. He has a wonderfully long and broad body type that drips projection and a long arm action. The ball comes out of his hand well, registering in the mid-80s with his fastball at this time. His best pitch is his slider, though he did not get to that pitch in this outing, we have seen it in previous events. Keep a close eye on him for the draft, he could jump up in the spring time as a name to know. It was at the plate where Ek stood out in this event. He has plus bat speed and regularly made hard and loud barrel contact. He has leverage in his stroke and with solid present day power, he has a chance to develop above average future power. His swing plane is pretty flat and he worked the middle and opposite fields well, showing a nice approach for a young power prospect. Around the bag he provides a large target and is still developing feel for the position. He is a top end student and signed with Saint Mary's (CA) College. Because he is a teammate of top prospect Nick Noonan, Ek will have numerous opportunities to impress the pro scouts this spring.
