The first player to ascend through the ranks and reach the major leagues in recent baseball drafts has typically been a short reliever, capable of helping a bullpen in a low-profile set-up or situational role.

Based on his brilliant showing this spring for Mississippi State, lefthander Jacob Lindgren ranks as an early favorite from the Draft Class of 2014 to reach the majors first. In fact, a number of scouts that have seen the 6-foot southpaw do his thing in abbreviated outings in the Southeastern Conference say he has been so dominant that he may be ready to pitch in the majors as soon as August or September—glowing praise, for sure, considering the first player in the 2013 draft still has yet to ascend to baseball’s highest level.
