A well written scouting report will often contain references to a pitcher’s ability to repeat or not repeat his pitching mechanics. A similarly written report on a hitter will make note of whether swing mechanics have too many variables for any level of consistency with different types of pitches.

New Jersey high school right hander Joe Gatto is close, very close, to reaching the point in his development where he can repeat his mechanics. But he’s not quite there yet and the inconsistencies he’s shown over the last year will likely keep him out of the first round this June. But there is no question that the long-legged, 6-foot-5, 215-pound righthander has the raw stuff and the pitches to warrant consideration at that high level.
