2004 PERFECT GAME TOP 100 and 800 More
Published: Tuesday, June 08, 2004

Most top prospect lists are based on how people think the June MLB draft will go. Perfect Game has always ranked players on ability and projection, without taking the draft and signability into account. After all, it’s the job of the MLB clubs to determine signability.

We feel our job is to rank players based on ability. Sometimes a player has proven to be so talented, that despite an injury, we will still rank him highly. ie. Nick Adenhart. The Cubs did not give up on Kerry Wood because he had Tommy John surgery, so why should we give up on the player we had ranked #1 most of the last year? Besides, we’re projecting he will come back strong as ever and become an early pick, if he attends college.

Several players listed on the PG Top 100 are not considered signable. These players are very committed to the colleges they have chosen. Each year we are seeing more and more college players going early in the draft, so it’s not all that bad of a decision for some players.

Past PG Final Top 100 lists have included several players that we knew had signability or medical concerns. That did not change our mind regarding their ability and how we ranked them. A few of the past PG Top 100 High School lists have included players such as RHP Dewan Brazelton (TN) who became a first rounder out of college. This year’s first round draft projections include former PG Top 100 players, RHP Wade Townsend (TX) Rice, RHP Thomas Diamond (LA) New Orleans, and LHP Jeremy Sowers (KY) Vanderbilt. Of course, Sowers was a 1st round pick out of high school who decided to attend Vandy. Then there was RHP Chris Lambert (NH) Boston College who would have made our Top 100, but we didn’t see him until after the draft that year.

So when looking at this list, understand that several of these players will be attending college programs. Their true draft value will be realized down the road. Some will be drafted much lower, or not at all, due to signability or medical issues. Once again, it’s only their ability and projection, that we base these rankings on. We did make some minor adjustments based on injuries.
