CARTERSVILLE, Ga. – Texas Christian University added another gem to their already stellar 2014 recruiting class, landing catcher Zack Plunkett just last week. Plunkett will join former Perfect Game WWBA World Championship MVP Evan Skoug as the lone catchers in TCU’s 2014 class. RHP Tyler Kolek, the top-ranked player in the 2014 class, is also committed to TCU.
After receiving several offers from schools following his showing at the Metrodome last June during the Perfect Game National Showcase, Plunkett was able to narrow down his choices to two before making his decision to become a TCU Horned Frog.
“It really came down to TCU and Rice. I felt like both schools are top-notch in academics and in their baseball programs and that’s what I was really looking for,” the Hurst, Texas native said. “In the end I chose TCU because I grew up watching them play – my mom went there. It’s been a dream of mine since I was a little kid, to play at TCU and be a Horned Frog.”
Plunkett said he had been to Rice and TCU on multiple occasions for different baseball camps and that those trips have given him a good feeling about what both schools are like.
The 6-foot-2 catcher had to overcome a broken hand, which forced him to miss much of his spring season last year, but he said he has come back stronger than ever and was rejuvenated for a tough summer circuit that included the Perfect Game National Showcase, the highlight event to a grueling summer schedule.
“Playing in the Perfect Game National Showcase was great because I got to play against a lot of really talented competition and make a lot of friends that I’ll be playing with and against at the next level,” said Plunkett. “It also gave me a lot of exposure to schools. I got a lot of emails and phone calls after that event. It was a great opportunity and I’m glad I went.”
Plunkett first heard interest from TCU in the fall, in which he said his initial reaction was ‘overjoyed’.
“I felt really blessed to have been given the opportunity and I’m just really happy to be able to play baseball for TCU. I’m really glad to be a Horned Frog.
Plunkett is ranked No. 462 nationally for the 2014 high school class. He’s the No. 57 catcher nationally and the No. 42 prospect in Texas for the 2014 class.
The talented catcher gives TCU’s 2014 recruiting class thirteen commits so far, including nine in the Top 500 and three in the Top 100. Texas Christian University’s 2014 recruiting class currently ranks 22nd.
