Two Big Events Starting July 7th

July 7-15 - PG WWBA Sr. Division National Wood Bat Championship Marietta, GA, East Cobb Complex.

July 15-20 - PG WWBA Jr. Division National Wood Bat Championship Marietta, GA, East Cobb Complex.

PG WWBA Senior Division National Wood Bat Championship This WWBA event is the summer version of the PG/Baseball America World Wood Bat Championship held in October at the Marlins/Cardinals/Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter, FL. Both are two of the largest scouting events in baseball.

Many of the nation’s top prospects played in last year’s WWBA tournament. Several high unsigned draft picks (2002) competed. In fact, Zach Greinke, 1st round selection (KC Royals) signed right in the middle of the tournament for well over 2 million dollars. Tyler Greene, Micah Owings, Camilo Vasquez, Jason Neighborgall, Gaby Sanchez, Romelio Lopez, Ross Lewis were all among the many (2002) draft picks who played.

Of course, there were a large number of top 2003 and 2004 prospects at last year’s Wood Bat Championship. Including many who became first round selections this past June. Jeff Allison (MA), Chad Billingsley (OH), John Danks (TX), Ryan Harvey (FL), Chris Lubanski (PA), Lastings Milledge (FL), Jarrod Saltalamacchia (FL), Matt Moses (VA) and Adam Jones (CA) were all first rounders who were named to the all-tournament team. There were over 60 other players at last year’s tournament who became top 5 round picks this June.

The Florida Bombers went unbeaten defeating the Ohio Warhawks in the championship game. ABD California and East Cobb Georgia finished tied for third place. Many of the very best summer programs in the nation competed in front of hundreds of scouts and top college coaches. One scouting director claimed that this event had the most talent he had ever seen other than the PG/BA World Championship in October. The competition was fierce and the players were outstanding. Baseball America reported over 25 pitchers who touched 93 mph or better. Micah Owings was clocked at 97 a few times.

This year’s tournament looks as good if not even better than last year. There will be 50 of the nation’s highest level teams trying to win the rings. Entered are top teams and players from California, Texas, Florida, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Alabama, Louisiana, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, West Virginia, Indiana, Washington, New York, Ohio, Nevada, Canada, Puerto Rico and top players from nearly every state in the country. It should be a great week of high level baseball.

PG WWBA Junior Division National Wood Bat Championship

This will be the first year for the Junior Division Championship. It will be highly competitive with many of the best 04 and 05 teams and players from all parts of the country. Perhaps the only difference will be the fact that no “03” grads or draft picks will be in the tournament.

Both tournaments will be utilizing “Digital Scout and Digital Stat” programs. This should allow for better over-all coverage of the tournament. Ongoing coverage will be posted on the WWBA website. worldwoodbat.com

David Rawnsley, former Baseball America columnist, will give daily reports from Marietta. Rawnsley has recently been named WWBA National Scouting Coordinator. Gregg Legg, who coaches the Bama Bombers, has recently been named Perfect Game’s National WWBA Director in charge of teams and players. Legg is also in charge of coordinating Perfect Game Identification Camps.
