Rice has the ability to make some serious noise in the NCAA postseason at the end of the year, but to accomplish that, it will need to take care of business without junior right-handed pitcher Jordan Stephens, who will miss the duration of the 2014 season because of Tommy John surgery.
Red flags were raised last Friday when Stephens, who had struck out three and allowed just one hit in two innings against Texas, removed himself from the game entering the third inning of work. The Owls, at the time, listed his condition as arm soreness, and to be further evaluated this week.
