Different kind of Sun Belt

Kendall Rogers

It's like old times again for the Sun Belt Conference.

For many seasons, the Sun Belt fought the Southern Conference for billing as the nation's elite mid-major conference. However, the league took a step back last season, as usual stalwarts such as Louisiana-Lafayette, Troy and South Alabama finished their respective campaigns with records of 23-30, 28-30 and 23-34.

So, when the time arrived for the Sun Belt head coaches' annual Winter Meetings, ULL head coach Tony Robichaux wanted to make one thing clear: He wanted, and the other head coaches wanted the league to return to its rightful spot in the college baseball conference hierarchy.

Safe to say Robichaux and the other head coaches are holding up their end of the bargain this season, as the league is primed to have three or four at-large bids heading down the stretch. And record-wise, ULL is 33-15, Troy is 35-13 and South Alabama is ranked in the latest PG College Top 25 and sitting pretty overall at 37-13.

"You know, we kind of had a drop off as a league last year, and we wanted to get this thing back to where it was before," ULL head coach Robichaux said. "It's been a grind in this league this season, but I'd say that's a good thing."
