There’s a distinct pattern to the development of the modern day elite college prospect, a pattern that the scouting world has become familiar with and relies on year to year. The elite draft prospect usually spends a summer playing in the Cape Cod League or with Team USA after earning their way there by standing out in the regular season. Their performances there give us the beginnings of a working list of who the top players are heading into the spring. Hunter Renfroe did play summer ball, but he certainly hasn’t taken the usual route to his now likely first round draft pick status.
