Bishop Gorman won a seventh consecutive state championship, besting Green Valley's previous record for longest streak of 4A titles. The Gaels, who climbed to No. 2 this week, got yet another dominant season out of 3B/RHP Joey Gallo who set the state's career home run record this season and touched 100 mph with his fastball as the team's closer.
Georgia's state championship weekend produced repeat titles for No. 7 Parkview (second consecutive 5A title) and No. 8 Columbus (third consecutive 3A title). After being slowed by nagging minor injuries during much of the season Parkview 1B/RHP Matt Olson came up huge in the championship game, hitting a championship winning walk-off home run for the second consecutive season. Columbus OF/LHP Kyle Carter threw a shutout in game one of their state championship series and 3B/RHP JT Phillips earned the win on the mound and homered in the clinching game.
California's newest edition of May Madness leaves just one representative in the top ten; No. 4 Mater Dei, who has survived the mine field that is the Southern Section Division I playoffs to this point, and will be playing in the semifinals. The San Diego Section playoffs have been much more tranquil for highly ranked teams, as No. 16 Cathedral Catholic and No. 17 El Capitan have both advanced to their respective title games.
Texas' state playoffs had its biggest casualty of the postseason this weekend as Calallen suffered just its second loss of the season, in a one-game set against Champion (TX) in the 4A regional semifinal, falling from No. 5 all the way down to No. 30. Meanwhile No. 6 Corpus Christi Carroll continues its ascent up the national rankings as they are one series away from a third consecutive trip to the final four in Round Rock.
Newly crowned South Carolina 4A champion Ashley Ridge makes the jump into the top 15 this week after knocking off perennial powerhouse Byrnes in the state championship series to cap off a 30-2 season.
The list of state champions in the rankings includes: No. 1 American Heritage (FL), No. 2 Bishop Gorman (NV), No. 5 Archbishop McCarthy, No. 7 Parkview (GA), No. 8 Columbus (GA), No. 9 Spruce Creek (FL), No. 10 Barbe (LA), No. 11 St. Pius X (TX), No. 13 Columbus (FL), No. 14 Ashley Ridge (SC), No. 20 Chaparral (AZ), No. 21 Oak Grove (MS), No. 23 Loganville (GA), No. 24 Venice (FL), No. 25 Cherry Creek (CO), No. 28 Pensacola Catholic (FL), No. 29 Kentwood (WA), No. 32 Carl Albert (OK), No. 33 Oxford (AL), No. 35 Arlington (TN), No. 45 Edmond North (OK) and No. 50 Piedra Vista (NM)
