West Memorial Day Champs Crowned

Todd Gold
GLENDALE, AZ-- Camelback Ranch's state-of-the-art stadium, which serves as the spring training home of the Chicago White Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers, hosted the championship games of the 2012 WWBA West Memorial Day Classic.

Click here for a breakdown of some of the teams and players that made strong impressions on the PG scouting staff during pool play of the 2012 WWBA West Memorial Day Classic.

18u Division

Champion: So Cal Elite

Most Valuable Player: 2014 OF/RHP Dominic Baca (Northview HS, Upland, CA), So Cal Elite
Most Valuable Pitcher: 2012 RHP Gary Cornish (Arcadia HS, Phoenix, AZ), Angels Elite 2012

Pool F represented itself extremely well in the playoffs. The championship matchup pitted pool champion So Cal Elite against it's runner-up Angels Elite 2012. The most talented roster in the tournament, in terms of prospects, the Diamondbacks Elite Scout Team finished third in the pool, after losing close games to both of the championship game participants. Nobody in the pool went winless and everyone put up double digit runs.

The only two teams to go a perfect 4-0 in pool play were the 17u and 18u teams from All-Star Baseball Academy. All-Star Baseball Academy 18u and the Playa Vista Orioles were the two teams that fell short in the semifinals.

The top pitching velocity from the event was Dbacks Elite Scout Team 2014 RHP Ryan Castellani (Brophy Prep, Phoenix, AZ) who topped out at 90 mph.

16u Division

Champion: Arizona Prowlers

Most Valuable Player: 2015 SS Rudy Karre (Liberty HS, Peoria, AZ), Arizona Prowlers
Most Valuable Pitcher: 2015 RHP/SS Tyler Wyatt (Liberty HS, Peoria, AZ), Arizona Prowlers

Similar to the 18u tournament, one pool produced both championship game participants. The Arizona Prowlers avenged their tourney opening 10-1 blowout at the hands of the Playa Vista Orioles, by pulling out a dramatic 4-3 victory in the championship.

The MVP selection in the 16u division was a difficult one. Playa Vista Orioles 2014 C Tommy Pincin (Upland HS, CA) was a very strong candidate, but the fact that opposing teams wisely chose to pitch around him prevented him from putting up the kind of numbers his hitting tools suggest he is capable of. Pincin hit .357/.526/.714 with a home run in the playoffs and also sat 84-86 during 1 1/3 shutout innings during the championship game. Ultimately the award went to Rudy Karre who hit .625/.714/1.000 with a home run and 10 RBIs for the champion Prowlers.

Most Valuable Pitcher Tyler Wyatt opened some eyes by running his fastball up to 85 mph, which is impressive for a highly projectable freshman two-way player.

14u Division

Champion: SoCal National Travel Team

Most Valuable Player: 2015 RHP/1B Eric Allphin (Norco HS, Ontario, CA), So Cal Elite 14u
Most Valuable Pitcher: 2015 LHP/1B Nick Sprengel (El Dorado HS, Placentia, CA), SoCal National Travel Team

After capturing the 14u MLK Championship in January, SoCal NTT picked up right where they left off during the winter by coming up big when it counted most (playoffs) after a solid but unspectacular showing in pool play. 2015 LHP Nick Sprengel topped out at 83 mph while throwing a complete game to send SoCal NTT to the title game with a win over All-Star Baseball Academy 14u.

6-foot-2 195 pound RHP/1B Eric Allphin stood out in the 14u division not only by towering over most other players in the tournament, but also with his advanced tools. He topped out at 85 mph while throwing nine shutout innings with a 12:1 K:BB ratio, but also by piling up four extra base hits in five games.
