With Tuesday's college baseball action in the books, here's our inside look back at the highlights and lowlights from around the country.
TEAM OF THE DAY: Georgia
After a poor showing against UCLA at home two weekends ago, the Bulldogs responded last weekend with a home series win over Tennessee. Now, the Bulldogs appear to be back on track, taking an impressive 7-1 decision over rival Georgia Tech. Starting pitcher David Sosebee set the tone with three scoreless innings, while third baseman Curt Powell led the way at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBIs.
PLAYER OF THE DAY: Jeff Gardner, of, Louisville
The Cardinals had an impressive day on the diamond with a blowout win over the Big Ten's Ohio State Buckeyes. It was Gardner who led the way at the plate. The talented sophomore went 4-for-5 with a double, three runs scored and four RBIs. Gardner was one of four Cardinals that finished the day with multi-hit performances.
UPSET OF THE DAY: New Mexico State over Arizona
The Wildcats haven't been tested in a big way this season, and must bounce back against the Aggies on Wednesday to head into this weekend's Oregon State series with a lot of confidence. The Aggies, which have been solid this season, put on an impressive display in a 7-4 triumph over the Wildcats. New Mexico State relievers Evan Mott and Robert Roher stymied Arizona, while Wildcats starting pitcher Tyler Hale allowed three runs on six hits in five innings.
FIVE BEST
East Carolina (15-4): The Pirates are playing a good brand of baseball and picked up a solid 6-5 win over sizzling hot North Carolina State. ECU reliever Andy Smithmeyer was tremendous in relief, striking out five in three scoreless innings. Meanwhile, outfielder Philip Clark went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.
Texas State (14-6): After a see-saw type of series against SFA over the weekend, the Bobcats put to rest any potential doubt with an impressive 8-4 win over surging TCU. Texas State starting pitcher Taylor Black tossed 3 2/3 scoreless innings, while third baseman Isaac Nuti knocked in two runs to lead the offense.
Louisville (15-6): It's not like the Cardinals needed it in a crushing 20-0 win over Ohio State, but freshman right-handed pitcher Jared Ruxer put together a great start, striking out two and allowing just four hits in five shutout frames. Ty Young, Jeff Gardner and Kyle Gibson were great at the plate, while second baseman Nick Ratajczak went 5-for-5 with four runs scored.
Florida State (18-2): You'd think the Seminoles would be sluggish after playing a three-game series against Virginia the last three days before facing Stetson on Tuesday. Well, not so much. The Seminoles once again were outstanding in a 17-8 win over the Hatters. Right fielder Seth Miller led the way with a grand slam and six RBIs, while hot-hitting center fielder James Ramsey went 2-for-4 with a home run, two runs and three RBIs.
Southern Miss (12-9): The Golden Eagles hit rock bottom over the weekend with a brutal home series loss to Murray State. However, whatever message coach Scott Berry gave them, they listened. The Eagles thrashed in-state foe Ole Miss 10-0 on Tuesday. Boomer Scarborough put together a solid start on the mound, while first baseman Blake Brown led the way at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a triple, home run, two runs and three RBIs.
FIVE DISAPPOINTMENTS
Stetson (15-5): The Hatters had a golden opportunity to make a statement against Florida State. Instead, their pitching depth was exploited a bit in a tough 17-8 loss. Relievers Chad Rood, Tucker Donahue, Cameron Griffin and Jake Boyd all struggled on the mound in the loss.
Ohio State (10-8): What a bizarre game the Buckeyes had against Louisville on Tuesday. We're still trying to figure out why starting pitcher John Kuchno was left in the game so long. Kuchno worked just 1 2/3 innings for the Buckeyes, allowing 10 runs (all earned) on eight hits. Meanwhile, relievers Paul Geuy and Trace Dempsey also struggled. The Bucks failed to earn a marquee win for the Big Ten.
San Francisco (10-12): It wasn't too long ago we thought the Dons would be one of the big surprises this season. Now, things are looking a little bleak for USF, as it sits at 10-12 after dropping a 4-3 bout to California. Dons starting pitcher Andrew Pulido allowed two runs in three innings, while the bats couldn't get going with just two Dons finished the afternoon with multi-hit performances.
Kent State (8-9): The Flashes lost some legitimate talent from last year's NCAA Regional title game club. And for now, it looks like it'll take them some time to get it going this spring. Kent State starting pitcher Michael Clark allowed six runs on nine hits in 4 1/3 innings of work, while the bullpen didn't fare any better in a 14-2 loss to Fresno State.
Boston College (6-12): What an unbelievable turn of events for the Eagles the past few weeks. What started as such a promising campaign has turned into a real-life nightmare. The Eagles are scuffling in a big way right now, dropping a 3-1 decision to Holy Cross. The Eagles mustered just five hits against Crusaders pitching.
