SAN MARCOS, Texas -- Kyle Finnegan has a chance to be Texas State's next great pitcher.

The Bobcats had one of the nation's elite arms last season in hard-throwing right-hander Carson Smith. Smith put together a solid campaign and was drafted by the Mariners in the eighth round of the MLB draft. He would've gone much higher if not for injury concerns.

Entering fall workouts without Smith, the Bobcats had some major concerns about their weekend rotation. Colton Turner was a quality returning arm, but they needed someone else to rise to the occasion and provide quality starts.

Finnegan was more than willing to put in the work to fill the void.

"I think his growth and maturity really jumped from freshman to sophomore year," Texas State coach Ty Harrington said. "He had a good summer and came back during fall workouts completely locked in. He looked really good."
