Austin Peay made a statement on behalf of the Ohio Valley Conference last season when it upset Georgia Tech in NCAA Regional action.
The Governors were unable to win the Atlanta Regional, but perhaps that trip and earning a win over a very good team has set the stage for an incredibly bright future.
Only time will tell, but the Governors are in good shape entering 2012.
Though Austin Peay will have a very solid club this season, the OVC headliner has to be Jacksonville State, which returns several key hitters and pitchers, including hard-hitting first baseman Ben Waldrip and outfielder Kyle Bluestein in addition to pitchers Aaron Elias and Todd Hornsby.
The OVC race is wide open after Jacksonville State and Austin Peay. Tennessee Tech, Southeast Missouri and Eastern Kentucky will battle for the middle spots in the pecking order, while even Tennesee-Martin is expected to make some strides this season.
The OVC race will be an interesting one to follow as the season progresses.
For now, it appears to be the Governors and Gamecocks duking it out.
