San Francisco returned to its winning ways last season with an impressive West Coast Conference campaign. But it’s not a conference title in 2011 that has observers and scouts buzzing, it’s right-handed starting pitcher Kyle Zimmer and a squad filled with potential.

Perhaps we got our greatest taste of what to expect this season when the Dons shocked the UCLA Bruins to begin the Los Angeles Regional last season. USF, of course, failed to advance to an NCAA Super Regional, but a strong statement was made – this is a program to watch.

While the Dons headline the WCC entering 2012, the conference title race essentially is wide open with teams such as Gonzaga, San Diego and Loyola Marymount not far behind.

There’s also BYU, which joins the league for baseball after several seasons in the Mountain West Conference.

Additionally. St. Mary’s has some very quality arms and players with Martin Agosta, Patrick Keane and Patrick Wisdom leading the way, while Pepperdine has enough talent to make some noise. For the Waves, it’s all about putting the right pieces together.

Meanwhile, Santa Clara looks for a new direction with former UC San Diego coach Dan O’Brien now in charge.
