ANAHEIM, Calif. – The annual Division I Baseball business meeting at the American Baseball Coaches Convention has a history of including some fireworks. For instance, several northern coaches spoke in favor of a universal start date a few years ago, while in another year some coaches were hot about the NCAA’s new transfer rule.
Perhaps we should consider it a good development for college baseball, but this year’s meeting was tame and lacked excitement. There were no outbursts, and no coaches stood up to speak on behalf of any issue or proposal.
It’s safe to say things are status quo – at least for now – in college baseball.
Though no sparks flew in the meeting, there were plenty of interesting topics on the table, including the Academic Progress rate as how it relates to postseason play, the actual postseason format and the revised RPI formula, the expense allowance proposal, length of season limitations, and certain items related to the 2011 and ’12 NCAA postseasons.
