MARIETTA, Ga. – The University of Delaware almost got an absolute steal when they earned a commitment from Millsboro, Del., 2012 RHP/OF Jamie Jarmon in mid-May.
Given his location and lack of appearances in showcases and tournament the past two years, Jarmon had somewhat flown under the radar. He committed to the Blue Hens in May as the summer circuit was beginning.
Jarmon withdrew his commitment from Delaware after just two weeks. College coaches and scouts alike got the ability to watch him play, and with his extreme athleticism at 6-foot-3, 195 pounds, it was abundantly clear Jarmon was an elite recruit and potential top prospect.
Jarmon once again turned heads Saturday morning. Though his team, the Del Mar Va. Canes, dropped a tough 3-0 decision to the Texas Sun Devils, Jarmon was impressive. He only went 1-for-2 with a walk, but showed excellent speed and a solid arm.
“The thing about Jamie is he’s a very athletic player, very fast, he has a great arm and tremendous physical tools,” his guardian and Canes Baseball coach Jamie Evans said. “The biggest thing he needs to work on is becoming a more well-rounded player and showing more discipline at the plate, things of that nature. He just needs to understand the game a bit more, but he just turned 17 a week ago.”
The versatile two-way player recently ran a 6.4, 60-yard dash and was clocked at 94-95 mph throwing from the outfield. He has topped out at 89-90 mph on the mound.
Jarmon, who’s still uncommitted following his split with Delaware, has a tough decision to make the next couple of months. He has visited Virginia and South Carolina, and the Cavaliers and Gamecocks are his favorites along with East Carolina and Clemson.
East Carolina, Clemson and South Carolina have or will offer Jarmon, while Virginia also is a possibility. He expects a formal offer from the Tigers next week when he visits the Clemson campus on the way home from the WWBA 17U tournament.
“I’m looking at location, where programs are, conferences they play in and the fact they’re great programs as a whole,” Jarmon said. “Between academics and facilities, those are the biggest things. All of those schools have tremendous programs.”
Jarmon has no favorite at this point.
“I’m pretty familiar with Virginia and I’ve been to South Carolina multiple times. I know my way around both places,” he said. “I’m also looking forward to visiting Clemson.”
Jarmon is ranked 170th nationally, first in the State of Delaware and 56th nationally in terms of outfielders.
