Game 1 Analysis: Rogers' inside take

HOUSTON -- Stanford pitcher Mark Appel, one of the top prospects in the college sophomore class, struck out four batters in 5 2/3 innings of work, as the Cardinal opened the season with an impressive 5-3 win over Rice.

Appel is rated the Perfect Game No. 2 prospect in the 2012 draft class. He was 94-97 MPH with his fastball against the No. 13 Owls, dropping down to as low as 75 MPH with his off speed stuff.

The second video features the repertoire of Rice freshman right-hander John Simms. Simms is the 18th ranked prospect in the freshman class, and was consistently 89-93 with his fastball. He struck out four batters and allowed a run on five hits in five innings against the Cardinal.
