February 17: Arlington Country Day (FL) 10 Montverde Academy (FL) 5
Over 150 scouts were in attendance Wednesday night in Jacksonville and top prospects Javier Baez and Francisco Lindor did not disappoint.
Baez took a very impressive pre-game batting practice, blasting more than a dozen homeruns from foul pole to foul pole.
Lindor was impressive as well, showing off 10-15 pounds of added muscle since last summer. He once again displayed the plus defensive actions that make him a likely first round pick.
Montverde led 4-2 before Arlington Country Day plated six unanswered runs with Baez hitting an RBI triple in the 5th inning.Brian De La Rosa hit 2 home runs and Gabriel De Cruz had 2 RBI to pace the ACD offensive attack as the won the game 10-5
Baez was 1 for 3 on the day, while Lindor went 3-3 with a BB, SB, and 3 runs scored.
ACD RHP Ethan Walker also put himself on the radar of many scouts as his fastball was 87-88, touching 90 mph. The 6’2 210 lb freshman is a power arm that could make ACD very tough to beat this year.
Every Major League team will have their eyes on Montverde, Florida on Thursday as two of the top infield prospects in the country square off.
Arlington Country Day is led by Javier Baez, currently ranked #11 by Perfect Game in the Class of 2011. The 6’1, 205 lb, SS/3B is seen by many as a potential first round pick in the June MLB draft. Montverde Academy boasts the fourth ranked player in the 2011 Class in SS Francisco Lindor. The switch-hitter hit .354 last season and is known more for his silky smooth defensive actions at SS. Lindor also profiles as a first round draft pick and has a chance to be the first high school position player off the board.
The two have been teammates before, in August they were both selected to the AFLAC All-American game, with Baez starting at 3B and Lindor starting at SS for the East. Lindor bolstered his draft stock that weekend with a great performance all weekend including winning Sunday’s home run derby. He also started a 4th inning rally with a leadoff triple, before being driven in by Baez, who had a triple of his own to right center field. The duo also paired up on the left side of the infield for the FTB Mizuno/Cardinals Scout Team during their 3rd place finish at October’s WWBA World Championship in Jupiter.
