WWBA 16U Canes Repeat
Saturday, July 17, 2010

Jeff Petty and the Canes are WWBA 16U national champions once again.

Last year, Petty lead the Canes North to a 6-0 win over the Florida Mustangs for the organization’s first title.

He did it again on Monday with a completely different team as the Canes 16s Green beat the Carolina Cubs Blue, 10-4, to join the East Cobb Astros as the only other squad to claim back-to-back 16U trophies since the tournament’s inception in 2004.

From the first inning, history appeared to be in the cards for the Canes.

After second baseman Landon Lassiter singled to bring home the first run of the game, right fielder Josh Henderson smoked a two-out, two-run home run over the right-field fence for an early 3-0 lead.

The Canes’ offensive barrage didn’t end there, though, as center fielder Tyler Long capped a five-run first with a 2-RBI single.

Carolina didn’t deflate thanks to Tyler Wooten, who scored the Cubs’ first run on a RBI ground out to second base.  In the top of the third, a bases-loaded walk left the Canes with a 5-2 advantage.

Canes extra hitter Addison Braswell brought the deficit back up to five in the bottom of the frame when he roped a 2-RBI double down the left-field line — a hit that left the Cubs fighting for momentum.

It quietly came in the top of the sixth when a fielding error cut the Cane’s lead to three.

But the kibosh came immediately after as the Canes posted three runs for a comfy 10-4 cushion. Canes right-handed pitcher Stephen Godfrey and lefty hurler Anthony Perry then closed out the win in the top of the seventh.

Canes southpaw Cole Irvin captured the Most Valuable Pitcher award. Irvin pitched the final 3 1/3 innings of the Canes’ 10-5 semifinal win over the Houston Banditos Black, allowing one run on two hits while striking out five.

He also started the first 2 2/3 innings of the championship finals game, giving up a run and three hits.

Nick Williams of the Banditos won the tournament’s Most Valuable Player honor. Williams went 10-for-26 during over the past five days, hitting seven extra-base hits — including six home runs — for 12 RBI.
