4 Sunshine Showcases set for June
Friday, January 15, 2010
It’s never too early to seek a spot in the Sunshine.
Perfect Game’s series of popular Sunshine Showcases will be held again this June in Florida, Texas, New York and California. If you’d like to attend, go to www.PerfectGame.org and click on the Sunshine Showcase that’s best for you and request an invitation. It’s as simple as that.
There will be three showcases on June 5-6. The Sunshine East Showcase will be held in Fort Myers, Fla. at the Red Sox 5-Plex and Terry Park. The Sunshine South Showcase will be held in Brenham, Texas, at Blinn College and Fireman State Park. The Sunshine Northeast will be held at Baseball Heaven in Yaphank, NY.
The other Sunshine event will be held on June 12-13, which is the West. It will be held in Chula Vista, Calif. (adjacent to San Diego) at Southwestern College and Eastlake High School.
The Sunshine events begin the circuit of Perfect Game’s summer showcases and have been a springboard to college and pro ball for numerous high school players. There was only one Sunshine Showcase at the beginning, but it proved so popular it was divided into East, South, Northeast and West events.
The Sunshine Showcases serve an important function for Perfect Game. They help us identify top prospects and invite them to the Perfect Game National Showcase in June.
Jarrod Saltalamacchia, a catcher for the Texas Rangers, Andrew Miller, a pitcher for the Florida Marlins, and Joey Votto, slugging firstbaseman for the Cincinnati Reds, have come through the Sunshine events. Michael Arencibia, an 2009 Aflac All-American, ran the 60-yard dash in 6.31 seconds at a Sunshine event last year. Gerrit Cole, a first-round pick by the Yankees in 2008 who enrolled at UCLA, flashed a 95 mph fastball at a Sunshine event in 2007. That same year, Will Raines uncorked a 1.74 pop time.
