Informed Athlete - National Letter of Intent

November is an exciting time for those high school seniors (or junior college athletes) who have been recruited by an NCAA Division I or II baseball program and have been offered an athletic scholarship to continue playing at the college level. These athletes will have an opportunity to sign a National Letter of Intent with an NCAA Division I or II institution during the early signing period that begins on Wednesday, November 11. The signing period continues through Wednesday, November 18.

Here is some of the important information regarding the National Letter of Intent:

1. The National Letter of Intent is not the same as a scholarship agreement. The NLI is a document that commits a student-athlete to attend the school of their choice for at least one academic year in exchange for the athletic scholarship awarded to the student-athlete.

2. A National Letter of Intent cannot be offered to a prospective student-athlete unless it is accompanied by an offer of an athletic scholarship. Therefore, walk-on athletes who are not receiving an athletic scholarship are not permitted to sign a National Letter of Intent (and, as a result, are not committed to attend a particular school until they enroll and begin classes).

3. A student-athlete can sign a National Letter of Intent with only one NCAA Division I or II institution. Both divisions utilize the same National Letter of Intent.

4. A prospective student-athlete cannot be offered a National Letter of Intent until he has registered with the NCAA Eligibility Center.

5. Special note to football players who are considering two sports in college: there is an early signing period penalty for football players who sign during the early period in another sport, such as basketball or baseball. The penalty is serious – the loss of one season of competition and the athlete is not eligible for practice or competition in football during their first year of enrollment. If an athlete is considering football and another sport at the Division I or II level, that athlete needs to wait until the football signing period in February, or until the regular signing period in April.

6. The National Letter of Intent must be signed by a parent or legal guardian for any student-athlete who is under the age of 21, even if the athlete is married.

7. If a student-athlete does not attend the institution that they sign with for one academic year, there could be a penalty involved before they can be eligible at another Division I or II institution.
