Dylan Covey had a disappointing 2-6 record when he was a freshman at Maranatha High School in Pasadena, Calif. Believe it or not, his struggles as a young pitcher two years ago helped make him an Aflac All-American today.

"When I was going into high school, there was a lot of hype about me," he said. "I kind of buckled under the pressure and didn't do that well."

Covey had been successful in youth baseball and some people naturally assumed he'd continue to dominate batters in high school, even though he was competing against players who were two and three years older. It didn't happen.

"It was tough," he said. "It was humbling. I didn't think I was the best, but everybody told me I should be winning all my games."

Covey learned a valuable lesson.

"OK," he remembers thinking, "it's not going to be given to me. I'll have to work for it."

That's exactly what he did. Covey fashioned an impressive 11-2 record this past season as a junior with a 1.60 ERA and 94 mph fastball. All that hype two years ago wasn't wrong, just a little premature.

He's been selected to play in the Aflac All-American High School Classic at PETCO Park in San Diego on Aug. 16, a convenient location because he's committed to playing college baseball at San Diego. "On the way down for the Aflac press conference we stopped at San Diego University, so that was cool," he said.

Covey watched the 2008 Aflac Classic at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. Now he'll be on the field himself.

"I'm looking forward to it," he said. "It's going to be fun."

Covey took a break from baseball in late July for a vacation in the Yosemite Mountains in northern California.

"We're at a lake. Just hanging out," he reported. "We got to look over the Yosemite Valley. It was really nice."
