Perfect Game Draft Totals



After spending months trying to explain why some players are ranked higher than others and that our opinion is not the gospel, it becomes a welcome to see the MLB First Year Player Draft end each year. One of Perfect Game’s major goals has always been to promote the game of baseball at every level in every way possible. We believe our player ratings and lists help promote college recruiting interest and the MLB draft in a big way. There are over 5 million unique visitors to the combination of PG websites and most are very interested in anything dealing with the draft or college recruiting. It’s not always a lot of fun, but it sure does stir up some emotions and create a lot of interest. Thus, we would like to think, that could sure be called promoting the game of baseball.

A fact that no one could dispute is that there is no independent organization that has actually seen and scouted more players than Perfect Game. This also holds true when all the Major League draft picks are considered. No independent organization has actually seen anywhere near the number of players who are selected each year in the MLB Draft. The truth is that most organizations that put out player reports and ranking lists are doing so with second hand information. They simply don’t have the staff or the resources and can not see enough of the players actually perform in person. There is a reason that Perfect Game is recognized as the largest independent scouting service in baseball. Among the many subscribers to pgcrosschecker.com, along with a large list of scouts and college coaches, is the rest of the world who writes reports and do rankings. We have seen players for the first time that no one has ever heard of and within a short period of time the player will appear on every list in baseball. The only people better than Perfect Game at identifying a large number of players are those people working in the scouting departments for Major League Clubs!

Of course much of the fact that PG sees more draft eligible players than anyone else is due to the fact that a large percentage of drafted players have attended Perfect Game events. However, Perfect Game also scouts many other places outside their own events. In addition Perfect Game works hard to identify the top underclassmen so by the time those players are draft eligible they might have many PG reports filed in the PG database. In other words, PG knows more about most of the amateur players in the country than anyone in baseball.

Last year (2007) over 72% of all players selected in the MLB draft had attended at least one (sometimes many more) Perfect Game events.

Here is a very current example… This year’s first round (30 picks) This sometimes makes a few people mad, but we always say… We do not make players better. That credit goes to the many people who are much closer to the individual player… The coaches, instructors, and most importantly the parents. Parents being the most important people of all. Then in the end the most important people become the college recruiters and professional scouts who take the identified player and determine his value to their organization or program.

All PG does is watch them play and let everyone know about them.

The 2008 Draft

1st rd

30 Picks – 27 had attended a Perfect Game event. The other three were seen and scouted with reports turned in, several times by Perfect Game Scouts. BTW, 9 of those players were selected by Perfect game as Aflac All Americans, including the first overall pick and 4 of the first 6 players selected.

1st rd Comp

16 Picks – 14 had attended a Perfect Game event. The other two were scouted and reported on many times by Perfect Game scouts. Another Aflac All American went in the comp 1st rd.

2nd rd

30 Picks – 28 had attended Perfect Game events. The other two included one we had no report filed. The 2nd rd included a couple more Aflac All Americans.

Comp B

4 Picks – 3 had attended Perfect Game events. The other had been seen and reported many times by PG scouts.

3rd rd

30 Picks – 26 had attended Perfect Game events. Of the other four we had scouted and filed reports on three. The 3rd rd also had a former Aflac All American

Of the first 108 players selected in the 2008 draft, only 10 players had not attended a Perfect Game event. The 98 out of the 108 represents nearly 91% of the draft that had attended PG events. Only two of the 108 players were not seen by PG scouts. Those two were not unknown however.

4th rd

30 Picks – 27 had attended a Perfect Game event. The other three were all seen and reported by Perfect Game scouts. This round included another Aflac All American.

5th rd

30 picks – 26 had attended Perfect Game events. The other four, all but one, had been seen and scouting reports filed by PG scouts. Amazingly, 6 Aflac All Americans were selected in the 5th round.

After the first 5 rounds, here are the totals. 172 players selected overall. 154 of them had attended Perfect Game events. Only three were not seen and reported by Perfect Game scouts. Nearly 90% of the players selected in the first five rounds in the 2008 MLB Draft had played in Perfect game events. Over 98% were scouted by Perfect Game.

6th rd

30 Picks – 25 had attended Perfect game events. 4 of the other 5 were scouted by PG. Three Aflac All Americans went in the 6th round.

7th rd

30 Picks – 26 had attended Perfect game events. 3 of the other 4 were scouted by PG. Three more Aflac All american’s went in the 7th round.

8th rd

30 Picks – 25 had attended Perfect Game events. 3 of the other 4 were scouted by Perfect Game. One Aflac All American went in the 8th round.

9th rd

30 Picks – 24 had attended Perfect Game events. 3 of the other 6 were scouted by Perfect Game.

10th rd

30 Picks – 26 had attended Perfect game events. 2 of the other 4 were scouted by Perfect Game. Two more Aflac All Americans went in the 10th rd.

We will be compiling the rest of the draft later. It looks like there’s a good chance that Perfect Game will break the old record, set last year when Perfect Game saw 1,048 players drafted who had attended PG events.
