The Wrigley Field Classic

The first ever Wrigley Field Classic was held September 6-7 in the Chicago area. Historical Wrigley Field, Alexian Park in Schaumburg, and Northwestern University were the three sites used for the tournament.

            

The tournament saw many of the top prospects from the mid section of the country. Joining the field were two national power amateur programs and the PG National team that included some top prospects from other parts of the country. The two teams from the southeast were Georgia’s East Cobb, arguably the top amateur program in the history of amateur baseball and the South Carolina Diamond Devils the reigning 17U WWBA National Champions.

There was a threat of rain on Sunday, but the baseball gods were with us and everyone got to play at Wrigley Field/

The event was organized by Bill Copp (Illinois Sparks) with help from Perfect Game. Chicago Cubs scout Stan Zielinski and Bill Copp deserve all of the credit for making this great event happen.

A few of the comments we heard over the weekend tell the whole story. Guerry Baldwin of East Cobb, who is usually not easily impressed, called it one of the greatest things they’ve ever been to. Baldwin went on to say, “It was a great honor playing in Wrigley Field”.

The Diamond Devils, John Rhodes was equally complimentary saying, “It doesn’t get any better than this. My players are having the time of their life”.

The same excitement and enjoyment was repeated by players, parents and coaches all weekend. It didn’t matter if the player was from Chicago, or Florida or anywhere else, this was a weekend to remember and cherish.

There wasn’t a championship format to this tournament, with each team playing four games. However, here are the results and a list of top prospects from the event.

Game #1 Wrigley Field
Central Ill. Outlaws – 8
Cangelosi Baseball – 2
Outlaws – Southern Illinois recruit, Lee Weld threw a complete game 4 hitter with 12 Ks. Weld topped out at 88 mph. Seth Schwindenhammer doubled and had two RBI. Blake Brown went 3 for 4 and Colton White went 2 for 2 with a triple.
Cangelosi – Used 8 pitchers in the Wrigley game. Matt Milroy looked good in his one inning, topping at 88 MPH. Luke Mottashed had an RBI triple.

Game #2 Alexian Field
Midwest Blazers - 2
Lids Indiana Bulls – 1
Blazers – Tyler Sparger and EJ Sexton combined on a six hit, one run game. Jack Fischer went 2 for 2 with a double and a walk.
Bulls – Mike Maddle doubled, Matt Reida drove in the lone Bulls run with a sac fly.

Game #3 Northwestern Rocky Miller Park
St Louis Pirates – 1
Michigan Diamonds – 0
St Louis – Lefty Alex Belew went four shutout innings, giving up only two hits with six strikeouts. Brandon Alexander and Matt Borgshulte teamed up to complete the shutout.
Ryan Richardson doubled in the winning run in the 7th inning.
Michigan – Jerry Ferris threw three shutout innings with four strikeouts. Andy Rademacher suffered the tough luck loss after going four innings while giving up only two hits.

Game #4 Wrigley Field
South Carolina Diamond Devils – 4
Midwest Redbirds – 2
South Carolina – The Diamond Devils used seven pitchers to combine on a 3 hitter, including Colby Holmes who topped at 90 and had two strikeouts in his inning. Drew Cisco (2010) also threw 90 mph while striking out two. Greg Harrison was 87-88 for the Diamond Devils. Chris Owings went 1 for 2 with a run scored and an RBI. Taylor Rozier and David Donald each had a hit and scored a run.
Midwest – Justin Jamison threw three innings without giving up a hit or a run. Jamison topped at 89 mph. Tyler Skulina (2010) topped at 90 mph striking out two in his one inning. Daniel Fields was 1 for 2 with a run scored and a stolen base. Myles Smith (2010) and Stetson Allie (2010) each had a hit.

Game #5 Alexian Field
Midwest Blazers - 7
Iowa Select – 6
Blazers – The Blazers made the most of six hits. Jake Junis went 2 for 3 with an RBI. Mike Handel and Jeff Jackson (2010) drove in runs with doubles.
Iowa – Clay Welter (2010) went 2 for 2 with a double and scored 3 runs. Scott Schebler was 2 for 3 with two doubles and three RBI.

Game #6 Northwestern Rocky Miller Park
Cangelosi Baseball - 3
Michigan Diamonds – 2
Cangelosi – Six pitchers combined to hold Michigan to 2 runs. Luke Mottashed went 2 for 2 and scored a run. Chris Savas went 2 for 2 with a double. Justin Ringo drove in the winning run with a single.

Game #7 Wrigley Field
St Louis Pirates - 9
Perfect Game – 3
St Louis – Jake Powers struck out 6 in four innings to get the win. Nick Tindall had a triple and 2 RBI. Ryan Huck doubled and had 2 RBI.
Perfect Game – PG used six pitchers Charlie Weinberg topped at 89 mph striking out 2 in his inning. Ian Gardeck was up to 92, but battled control problems. Clay Wallace (2010) topped at 90 mph. Joe Lovecchio was 92 MPH striking out two. Eric Summers was 88 in his inning. Tanner Perkins (2010) lefty was mid 80s and threw a perfect inning. Matt Helm went 2 for 3 with a double and 2 runs scored. Mike Falsetti doubled.

Game #8 Alexian Field
East Cobb - 8
Central Ill. Outlaws – 2
East Cobb – Ralston Cash (2010), Patrick Merkling and John Magliozzi (2011) combined to get the win. Cash and Merkling threw in the high 80s while 2011 Magliozzi lit up the gun at 92 mph. Jake Skole was 2 for 3, walked twice and scored twice. Blake Crohan doubled and scored twice.
Central Illinois – Nathan Dorris battled hard throwing four innings topping at 87 mph. Seth Schwinderhammer topped at 88 mph. Derek Sprout doubled and scored a run. Matt Fraum drove in a run with a sac fly.

Game #9 Northwestern Rocky Miller Park
Diamond Devils – 5
Lids Indiana Bulls – 5
South Carolina – Colby Holmes topped at 91 but gave up 4 runs. Brian Connolly went 2 shutout innings striking out 5. Greg Harrison had two hits and Drew Cisco doubled.
Indiana – Ken Mahala threw 3 no hit innings with 5 Ks. Tucker Barnhart went 4 for 4 with an RBI. Ken Mahala had two hits and two RBI.

Game #10 Alexian Field
East Cobb - 2
Midwest Redbirds – 0
East Cobb – Matthew Crownover and Ryan Newell combined on a two hit shutout with 13 strikeouts. Newell was in the high 80s. Patrick Savage was 2 for 2 with a double and an RBI. Trey Griffin and Miles Head each doubled for East Cobb.
Midwest – Tyler Hollstegge struck out three in two innings topping at 88 mph. Seth Dawes and James Sheltrown each singled for the only two hits.

Game #11 Alexian Field
Iowa Select – 9
Perfect Game – 0
Iowa – Rick Sandquist threw a perfect inning topping at 88 mph. Ben Strellner and Dirk Lindaman struck out the side in their inning of work. Keelen Sweeney joined in to help throw a conbined two hitter.Iowa scored 8 runs in the first inning on their only three hits of the game by Mitchell Overstreet, Clay Welter and Kellen Sweeney (2010).
Perfect Game – Ronnie Richardson threw consistently 92-93 but was unusually wild. Matt Helm and Tanner Perkins had the 2 hits for PG.

Game #12 Wrigley Field
East Cobb – 5
Midwest Blazers – 5
East Cobb – Hudson Randall threw three shutout innings striking out 5. Jake Skole went 2 for 2 with a double and two runs scored. Trey Griffin doubled with an RBI and Miles Head tripled with an RBI.
Blazers – Lefty Taylor Eikenberry threw a perfect inning topping at 87. Will Fadness went 2 for 3 and Mike Handel doubled and scored a run. Jeff Jackson and Jake Junis each had an RBI singles.

Game #13 Alexian Field
Midwest Redbirds – 5
Iowa Select – 4
Midwest – Dace Kime struck out 5 in his two innings of work to get the win. James Sheltrown went 3 for 3 with an RBI and run scored. Marcus Davis doubled and went 2 for 2 with an RBI and run scored. Jason Bagoly was 2 for 3 with a run scored.
Iowa – Kellen Sweeney went two inning giving up no hits while striking out four. Sweeney also went 2 for 3 with a home run and two RBI. Austin Christensen (2011) doubled.

Game #14 Northwestern Rocky Miller Park
Diamond Devils - 8
Michigan Diamonds – 1
South Carolina – Austin Pritcher went four innings giving up only two hits and striking out 4, throwing 87 mph. Chris Owings went 2 for 4 with a triple and three RBIs and 3 runs. Brison Celek was 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI. David Donald and Austin Barber each scored two runs.
Michigan – Shane Street had a double. Derek Dennis and Cam Luther had the other two Michigan hits.

Game #15 Wrigley Field
East Cobb – 5
Lids Indiana Bulls – 1
East Cobb – Jordan Cooper struck out 5 while giving up one hit in 3 innings. John Magliozzi, Matthew Crownover, and Patrick Merkling all threw a perfect inning. Patrick Savage tripled with an RBI. Mott Hyde doubled in a run. Trey Griffin had a hit and an RBI. Blake Crohan and Brandon Stephens each drove in a run with a single.
Indiana – The Bulls used 9 pitchers at the Wrigley Field game. Cody Coffey had the only hit and scored the only run for the Bulls.

Game #16 Alexian Field
Perfect Game – 9
Midwest Redbirds – 3
Perfect Game – Tanner Perkins struck out the side in his one inning. Joe Lovecchio, Charlie Weinberg and Tim Blackmon all pitched well out of the bullpen. Matt Helm homered. Alex Chittenden (2010) went 2 for 3 with a double. Reggie Williams went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Adam Walker and JD Williams added RBIs.
Midwest – Myles Smith topped at 88 during his stint on the mound. Stetson Allie (2010) struckout the side with 93 mph heat. Victor Roache went 2 for 3 with a triple. Drew Fitzpatrick, Daniel Fields and Jerad King each had a hit.

Game #17 Northwestern Rocky Miller Park
S.C. Diamond Devils – 5
Central Ill. Outlaws – 1
South Carolina – Drew Cisco topped at 89 mph, striking out 4 in 3 innings. Greg Harrison threw 4 shutout innings, topping at 88 mph. Chris Owings was 3 for3 with a double and three runs scored. TJ Young was 2 for 2 with a run and an RBI. Kirk Shelley was 2 for 2 with a double and an RBI. Daniel Aldrich doubled in a run.
Central Illinois – Matt Fraum pitched five innings and took the loss. Blake Brown had a double. Seth Schwindenhammer, Jordan Parr, and Derek Sprout each had a hit, Parr drove in the only run for the Outlaws.

Game #18 Wrigley Field
Michigan Diamonds – 8
Iowa Select – 4
Michigan – Three Michigan pitchers, Andy Radamacher, Jerry Ferris, and DJ Wielhouwer each threw scoreless innings. Starting pitcher Kyle Clark was topping at 87 mph. Daniel Russell went 2 for 3 with a triple, 2 runs scored and an RBI. Sam Ott and Steve Claypool were both 2 for 3. Ott had three RBI. Claypool scored twice.
Iowa – Jerad Barth struck out the side in his one inning of work. Scott Schebler tripled and scored a run. Barth doubled and scored a run. Chad Christensen and Mitchell Overstreet had RBI singles.

Game #19 Alexian Field
Cangelosi Baseball – 11
Perfect Game – 4
Cangelosi – Four pitchers combined to hold PG to 4 runs. Charlie White went 3 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored. Justin Kopale was 3 for 4 with 2 doubles, 2 runs and 2 RBI. Brandon Hohl was 2 for 2 and walked twice, scoring two runs and an RBI. Sam Picchiotti was 2 for 4 with a double, an RBI and scoring twice. Luke Mottashed went 2 for 2, 1 run and 1 RBI. Chris Savas doubled and scored a run.
Perfect Game – JD Williams, Mike Falsetti and Adam Walker each doubled. Matt Helm got the only other PG hit.

Game #20 Northwestern Rocky Miller Park
Midwest Blazers – 8
St Louis Pirates – 2
Blazers – Ryan Crowley threw 2 innings striking out three while giving up one hit. Jake Junis (2011) pitched a perfect inning topping at 86 mph. Jeff Jackson went 2 for 3 with a home run. Junis was 2 for 3 with 2 RBI. Seth McMullen doubled and scored a run. EJ Sexton, Taylor Eickenberry and Pat Ranbaud each had an RBI.
St Louis – Lee Strauss went 2 for 2 with a double. Nick Tindall had a double and scored a run. Brandon Alexander had an RBI double. Ryan Richardson and Zach Maggio had the other St Louis hits.

Game #21 Alexian Field
Cangelosi Baseball – 5
Lids Indiana Bulls – 1
Cangelosi – Brian Krowlikowski struck out the side in one inning of work. Kevin Gates, Krowlikowski, Matt Milroy, Dan Huenecke and Pat Gannon combined on a four hitter while striking out nine. Justin Ringo went 2 for 2 with a triple and 2 RBI. Steve Delporto was 2 for 2 with 2 runs scored. Jeff Boehm tripled and had 2 RBI.
Indiana – Justin O’Conner topped at 90 mph striking out three. Adam Norton was up to 87. Jake Naumann a loner from Cangelosi struck out 4 in two innings topping at 87 mph. Norton went 2 for 3. Mike Maddle had a double. Jake Hartley had the other Bulls hit.

Game #22 Northwestern Rocky Miller Park
St Louis Pirates - 7
Central Illinois Outlaws – 2
St Louis – Andy Flett threw a complete game 5 hitter topping out in the upper 80s. Nick Tindall homered in the first inning. Lee Strauss went 2 for 2 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI. Zac Zellers drove in a run with a double. Ryan Huck also doubled and scored a run.
Central Illinois – Luke Staub suffered the loss. Dane Opel hit a double driving in a run and then scoring himself. Seth Schwindenhammer doubled. Colton White, Derek Sprout, and Matt Frahm each singled.
