UConn 3, No. 25 Houston 2

Heading into the first game of the series the matchup of aces on Friday afternoon between UConn’s Anthony Kay and Houston’s Andrew Lantrip promised to be a good one and it lived up to the billing. Both arms carried the ball deep into the game, and while it was Kay and his Huskies that eventually came out on top with a 3-2 victory, it set the tone for what should be an exciting next two games to wrap up the series.

Making his second start at home this spring, Connecticut lefthander Anthony Kay appears to be growing stronger and sharpening his arsenal every time he takes the ball at Storrs. One of the top collegiate players out of the Northeast for this June’s draft, Kay’s stock is similar to Boston College righthander Justin Dunn’s in that with every start he could be gaining a little bit more helium which could ultimately lead to a top two round selection.

While he may not be the biggest prospect for the draft, listed at 6-foot-1, 187-pounds, Kay’s size in no way inhibited anything he did on the mound as he was able to both pound the ball downhill and carry his fastball velocity deep into the outing. After opening the game with a fastball that sat around the 93-95 mph range, Kay continued to show 94s and 95s into the fifth inning, all the while sitting rather comfortably in the 91-93 mph range until his last pitch of the game. You could also say Kay was efficient as he more than filled up he strike zone as 82 of his 117 total pitches were strikes and he finished the game with six strikeouts as opposed to just two walks, one of which was intentional.
