Friday Recaps: Kay sharp in big win | Solak, McKay shine in DH sweep

No. 5 Louisville 1, Notre Dame 0

Louisville completed a sweep of visiting Notre Dame in the first weekend of Atlantic Coast Conference play, edging out the Fighting Irish thanks to a rally in the bottom of the eighth inning that resulted in the game’s only run thanks to a successful suicide squeeze by Logan Taylor.

Much like the first game of Friday’s doubleheader, the contest on Saturday afternoon moved quickly as both starting pitchers pounded the strike zone and essentially matched each other pitch for pitch.

Louisville’s Drew Harrington, a junior lefthander picked up the win, as he went a full eight innings. While he may not have the same big-name recognition as his rotation-mates Kyle Funkhouser and Brendan McKay, Harrington has certainly performed at a high level this season.

Listed at 6-foot-2, 229-pounds the southpaw has a sturdy build with strength his upper and lower halves and he did a solid job of repeating his simple, efficient delivery. Harrington’s compact arm-action allows for some deception and hides the ball pretty well until releasing from his three-quarters arm slot. While not overpowering, Harrington’s 88-91 mph fastball is a quality offering because he was able to keep the ball down in the strike zone pretty consistently. Much like Brendan McKay, Harrington’s go-to secondary offering is a breaking ball, and he showed consistent feel and heavy usage for his 78-82 mph slider. He had adept command of the pitch and also played with the depth and tilt on the offering, often throwing it harder when trying to backfoot the pitch to righthanded hitters.
